It’s time to put yourself first
July 23, 2024 | By David St. Bernard
As a lawyer, entrepreneur and executive coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand the relentless demands placed upon professionals. In my legal career, my life was meticulously divided into six-minute increments, each dedicated to serving clients, meeting deadlines, and completing deliverables. Yet, while working hard to satisfy client demands, it was always so easy to overlook the most fundamental client of all: myself. This became increasingly detrimental to my mental and physical health, which was challenging as I’ve always strived to respect and cherish my health. In recognizing the disparity between my perceived values and lived existence, I learned many lessons in self-care that have proved invaluable for achieving work-life integration, some of which I’ve summarized below.
The Time Crunch Paradox
For busy professionals, time is money. In the legal world for example, billable hours are diligently tracked, ensuring every minute is accounted for and that they contribute to both the firm’s and clients’ bottomline. But what about our own personal bottomline? We sacrifice sleep, leisure, and personal connections, believing that our dedication is paramount to all competing interests. Unfortunately, without intentional behavioural modification, these high pressure systems can lead to self-care becoming an afterthought and those professional accolades paradoxically become increasingly difficult to not only achieve, but also maintain.
The Myth of Infinite Resilience
Society puts a premium on resilience—the ability to withstand extensive pressures without breaking—and so we pride ourselves on embodying that trait. Yet, like a rubber band stretched too far, we risk snapping. Our emotional reserves deplete, leaving us irritable, anxious, and disconnected. We forget that self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Working hard isn’t the enemy. However recovery, especially in times of prolonged exertion, must become a central part of the equation.
The Illusion of Productivity
Our lives are already overflowing with meetings, deadlines, and deliverables as we strive for peak productivity; however sustained productivity isn’t accomplished simply by managing our to-do list. It thrives when we recharge—when we step back from the fray and embrace self-care. A digital detox, a moment of mindfulness, or even a deep breath can rejuvenate our minds, and enhance not only our ability to effectively serve clients, but also more importantly, serve ourselves.
Breaking the Pattern: Self-Care and Work-Life Integration
To escape this overwork treadmill, we must redefine success. It’s not about the number of hours or weekends worked; it’s about sustainable excellence. Here’s how:
1. Prioritize Self-Care: Schedule self-care in your calendar as diligently as client meetings. Whether it’s a midday yoga session or a weekend hike, invest in your well-being.
2. Set Boundaries: Just as we respect client boundaries, establish limits for yourself. Say no when necessary, delegate tasks, and protect your downtime.
3. Integrate Work and Life: Rather than compartmentalizing, blend work and life. Take breaks during the day, connect with loved ones, and find joy in small wins.
4. Embrace Imperfection: Perfectionism fuels burnout. Accept that you’re human—flawed, vulnerable, and deserving of compassion.
As professionals, we advocate for our businesses and our clients. However, let’s not forget to advocate for ourselves. By embracing work-life integration and prioritizing self-care, we can break free from the trap of making time for everyone but ourselves. As we begin to respect our well-being as our greatest asset, our performance in all aspects of life can truly flourish.
